What does it take to stop drunk driving? Mothers Against Drunk Driving has been fighting for changes in law, education, and policing for decades. Now the Christensen Law team is joining that fight as a Supporting Sponsor of this week’s “Walk Like MADD.”
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was founded in 1990 with one purpose:
“The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking.”
While the language of this mission statement has changed over the years, the organization’s purpose and drive have not. Through their efforts, states have tightened drunk driving laws, lowered legal blood alcohol limits, and improved driver education. As a result, the number of drunk driving deaths has been cut in half since the organization came into being.
But the work is far from over. Drunk driving still kills almost 10,000 American motorists every year. Thousands more are injured when an intoxicated person make the terrible decision to take the wheel. Consequences like mandatory jail sentences and licensing restricts help, but they still don’t get every drunk driver off the road.
That’s why MADD is taking it to the streets, hosting 5k Walk Like MADD events in 60 cities around the country to raise money and continue the fight. On Saturday, August 20, 2016, Walk Like MADD is coming to Metro Detroit. The 5k walk will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Rochester Municipal Park.
This year’s walk is dedicated to Dr. Robert Geronemus, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A noted nephrologist, Geronemus was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident by a drunk driver on January 24, 2009. His daughter Heather chairs Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale. She is committed to eliminating drunk driving. The Detroit walk will raise money to ensure that fewer families have to deal with a loss like hers.
And Christensen Law will be there to help. Our firm has seen first hand the effects drunk driving accidents have on the families of their victims. We know that alcohol and automobiles don’t mix. That’s why we have signed up as a Supporting Sponsor for Detroit Walk Like MADD 2016.
Join us in support of MADD as they declare #DrunkDrivingEndsHere. Detroit-area residents can sign up to walk, donate, or volunteer. You can also create a team and walk together with your friends, family, or social organization.
Will you step up to protect the lives of your fellow motorists? Join Christensen Law in supporting MADD and their work to end drunk driving deaths once and for all.
