When you walk into an store that says it sells no-fault auto insurance and sign a policy, you expect to be covered. But a Michigan regulatory agency says that one Macomb County insurance agency has been providing fake policies and leaving its customers in the lurch.
The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) temporarily shut down Affordable Insurance Agency III in Clinton Township. The Macomb County insurance agency is accused of selling fraudulent no-fault auto insurance, taking customers’ money, and leaving them with no coverage.
That’s a big deal, especially under Michigan’s No Fault Insurance Act. The law requires every Michigan driver to buy no-fault insurance to cover themselves and their passengers in the event of a car crash. Without a no-fault insurance policy, a motorist is in danger of being pulled over and charged with a misdemeanor.
There are many drivers on Michigan roads today who take the risk and drive without no-fault insurance. They gamble that they won’t get pulled over or get into a car crash – which could cost them millions in uninsured medical costs.
But Affordable Insurance Agency III’s fraudulent activities put its customers at risk without their knowledge. They received a proof of insurance and have no way of knowing they are actually driving with fraudulent insurance. If one of the agency’s customers get into a car accident, he or she could be surprised with a pile of medical expenses that they had already paid to have covered.
That’s why the DIFS has summarily suspended the licenses of agents Samier S. Mishkoor and Esmeranda Kovacevic (formally Esmeranda Osmonovic) and Affordable Insurance Agency III’s to sell no-fault auto insurance in the state – shutting them down. According to DIFS Director Ann Flood:
“Drivers who made a purchase at Affordable Insurance Agency III, Inc. or through Mishkoor or Kovacevic are urged to contact the insurance company listed on their policy to determine whether their coverage is valid.”
The agency also provides a comprehensive Question & Answer website that can provide consumers with advice on purchasing a reliable insurance policy. If you discover that you have been the victim of a fraudulent insurance agency like Affordable Insurance Agency III in Macomb County, you can file a complaint with DIFS toll-free at 877-999-6442.
